GO! Chart

Developed in 1996 by Vicky Vincent and Dr. Carrice Cummings

 

What: a graphic organizer  

 

Who: all ages, any level

 

When: You use this when you want to develop metacognitive skills by activating and building prior knowledge, activating thinking before, during, and after reading, and organizing one's thoughts.  

 

How: 

- Choose text

- Develop goals and objectives according to Common Core State Standards

- activate/build prior knowledge using text/cover/illustrations in order to make predictions (use open-ended prompts; chart responses)

- use text/pictures to help students predict vocabulary, also introducing vocabulary that may be interesting or uncommon (chart responses)

- read the text, determine stopping points if needed and include prompts in order to record understandings, interpretations, and connections (chart responses)

- confirm/disconfirm original predictions (plot, and vocabulary)

- explore understandings, interpretations, and connections (go back in text if needed)

- organize text by using the information in the Understanding column
