Religion

Education revolved around religion and agriculture from 1600-1900.

Children went to school for 2 reasons:

- Learn about the Bible

- Learn specifics about agriculture

Christian moral education was more important in many of the Americans’ eyes than learning reading, writing, and arithmetic.

Even the ABC’s were taught through the Bible.

The ABC’s were learned by stories from the Bible.

Verse for each letter

Teacher would explain the verse by telling the story or reading it from the Bible

Example: For A – In Adam’s fall, we sinned all. This taught about Adam and Eve eating from the tree of knowledge, breaking God’s rule, and humans becoming sinful.
