Literature Circles

Developed in 1982 by Karen Smith

What: Literature circles are small groups that guide students to deeper understanding of what they read through structured discussion and extended written and artistic response.

Who: all grade levels; small groups

When: This is used during reading when the teacher wants students to dig deeper into the text.

Why: These small groups facilitate collaboration among students, allow them to make choices by choosing a role, and give students an opportunity to participate in meaningful talk.

How:

- select text or have students select text

- discuss roles and have students choose role/teacher assign roles

- the student will read the text

- the student will complete the task(s) according to his/her assigned role
