Look and Say

       1930s

The Dick and Jane series, most known reading series, also known as the look/say method consisted of popular basal readers written by William Gray and Zerna Sharp. A standard basal series came with books for students, a Teacher's Edition of the book, and a collection of workbooks, assessments, and activities. The Dick and Jane books utilized whole word or sight word reading. Phonetic analysis was included as part of each reading lesson. The characters in the series were representative of middle class families and communities.
