Directed Reading Thinking Activity (DRTA)

Developed in 1969 by Russell Stauffer

What: This is a strategy that assist teachers in directing/activating students' thinking prior to reading the text using open-ended questions, prompt students to assist them in evaluating their predictions and refine as needed, and facilitate thinking by prompting students to find supporting statements in the text.

Who: individual, small group, whole group; any grade level or any content area

When: You would use this when you want to facilitate active and thoughtful reading and improve critical thinking skills in your class

How:

- choose text (fiction or non-fiction)

- activate students' prior knowledge

- have students make predictions about what they will read about in the text. Ask students how they came up with their predictions

- read the text to your first stopping point

- ask students to confirm or revise prior predictions and make new predictions

- continue steps 4 and 5 until students have finished reading

- when students have finished reading, ask questions that prompt thinking and discussion
