RAFT

  • What: RAFT is a writing strategy that helps students understand their roles as writers, the audience they address, varied formats, and topic.

  • When: RAFT can be used before, during, and after reading as well as on an individual basis, small or whole group

  • Why: RAFT is used to provide students with different viewpoints, learn writing skills, think creatively about writing, and use across content areas.

  • How:

    • Display a completed RAFT

    • Describe roles

    • Model how to write responses to prompts

    • Have students practice in small group

Roles:

  • ROLE OF WRITER (Ask: Who are you as a writer?)

    • - movie star

    • - the president

  • AUDIENCE (Ask: To whom are you writing?)

    • - yourself

    • - a friend

  • FORMAT (Ask: In what format?)

    • - diary entry

    • - newspaper

  • TOPIC (Ask: What are you writing about? Why? What’s the subject?)
