Reader's Theatre

Developed in 1967 by Leslie Coger and Melvin White

What: This is a read aloud strategy where students "perform" by reading scripts created from grade-level books or stories. Usually done without costumes or props.

Who: all grade levels and content areas; small group

Why: This strategy gives students a reason to read aloud. This helps to improve fluency and comprehension.

How:

- select text

- teacher or student creates the script. *The author's words and phrases are kept intact, but divided into meaningful parts.

- students are assigned roles

- students practice a few times

- students perform
